Recreation Opportunities at WCU and the Surrounding Region Many students gain leadership and participatory experience through volunteer work at the University Center's 'Last Minute Productions' where a range of activities is planned for the on and off campus community. Activities range from concerts to outdoor pursuits. The location of the university between the Blue Ridge and the Great Smoky Mountains is a draw for students interested in outdoor recreation. There are many opportunities for students to enjoy outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing, white water kayaking and canoeing, rafting, caving, mountain bike riding, backpacking, skiing and wilderness travel. There are also excellent internships sites surrounding the campus for this type of activity, including, the Great Smokies National Park, The Blue Ridge Parkway, Lake Hartwell, The Nantahala Outdoor Center, and Project SOAR. There is also a strong concentration of camps in the area. The strongest industry in the region is tourism and many students enjoy internships at attractions and resorts in Western North Carolina and in the coastal areas of both North and South Carolina at places like Wilmington, Hilton Head Island, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston. There are many community parks and recreation agencies in the surrounding counties. Copyright © 2005 Western Carolina University |
