Scholarships
The Otto H. Spilker Endowed Scholarship has been fully endowed and allows us to give a scholarship of approximately $500 annually to an outstanding graduate student in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. The recipient must be a full-time degree candidate in a graduate program in HPER. The scholarship recipient is selected in the spring of each year and awarded to the student in the fall of the following academic year.
Selection is made based on the following criteria:
1. Preference will be given to candidates with a career interest in the teaching of physical education.
2. The candidate must have demonstrated academic excellence at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

The Women in Physical Education Endowed Scholarship was begun several years ago to honor some outstanding women who retired from the Health and Human Performance Department at WCU; June Banson, Alice Benton, Chris Friesner, Helen Hartshorn, Betty Peele, Sue Persons, and Betty Westmoreland Suhre. Endowed scholarships at Western require a corpus of $10,000 before interest from the scholarship fund can be used to provide scholarships to our students. The stated goal for this fund is to provide scholarships for deserving undergraduate students in our department.

Your support of these scholarships will allow us to increase the amount of the Spilker scholarship and begin to provide scholarship help for undergraduate students in our department.
Tax deductible contributions to either of these scholarship funds or to the Health and Human Performance Foundation Fund can be sent to Annual Giving, Special Gifts of Western Carolina University .
